Zofia and Laila have a wonderful friendship throughout the book, with Laila always baking cookies and more for Zofia and them two getting along very well.Įnrique and Laila are very close, with Enrique earnestly trying to figure out how to save Laila, and Laila making him food that he likes. By the end of the first book, it seems as though their romance has been temporarily halted due to Séverin’s cruel words to Laila, although they will be faking a relationship of sorts in the following book. While both of them harbor feelings for one another, they both deny that something between them could happen. Laila and Séverin have a complicated relationship. She works with Séverin to find a Book that she hopes will allow her to stay alive. Now, in the events of the book, they must work together, along with their other friends in order to find the Horus Eye of House Kore in exchange for Hypnos to allow Séverin to earn back his true inheritance for one last (except not really) heist. She is described as looking ethereal in her "L'Engime" headdress and costume, which include peacock feather motifs and pearl jewelry.īefore the story, she and Séverin had one night stand together and promise never to do it again. She has a scar downs her back where she was "made" into her body. Séverin says that everything in the world is drawn instinctually toward Laila, including the atoms of light that illuminate her beauty. Laila is Indian, being described in the book as having brown skin and dark eyes, along with dark hair. She understands people very well and can charm them quickly and easily. She is fierce and decisive and will protect those she cares about. She loves baking and dancing because they make her feel alive. She loves her friends and always wants to make sure they're alright. Though she'd rather be baking and coaxing her friends into trying her culinary experiments, time is racing against her and her fatal secret.

Laila is a world-class performer who thrills Paris with her dancing and helps Séverin in hope that it will lead her to a book that might be able to save her life, the book which the magician used to save her life. This gifted her the ability to "read" objects (to see their histories their previous owners' actions). However, the man warned her parents that his work will only last until her nineteenth birthday. Laila was a stillbirth, but because her parents desperately wanted a daughter, they brought her to a magician who bound her soul back into her body.
